The Salt Lake Tribune is switching to a new comments platform

sltrib.com

(The Salt Lake Tribune) Coral will be the new platform used by The Salt Lake Tribune for its comment section.

As subscribers, you are among our most dedicated readers.

You have told us you want an improved commenting experience. We listened.

Today, we’re announcing The Salt Lake Tribune is switching to a new platform as we look to improve the quality of the comments on sltrib.com.

Comments will be subscriber-only, which means users must have logged into their sltrib.com account to participate. You do not, however, need a subscription to read the comments.

Coral by Vox Media will provide community members with a streamlined experience (no waiting for a new webpage to load) and more opportunities to engage. It will also provide more ways for Tribune moderators to ensure comments are the best they can be.

We are moving to Coral, used by The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and The Seattle Times, on Wednesday. Effective Thursday, World Table will no longer be available.

Coral enables us to host a focused online discussion, involving you in our journalism more regularly through its question-and-answer format.

Other features commenters can expect with Coral include the ability to edit comments up to one minute after posting, hiding comments from certain users and a more simple upvoting/downvoting system. Coral also requires commenters to use their real names, not pseudonyms.

By requiring a subscription, users will be more invested and engaged with creating a comment community that is positive and thoughtful. It will also prevent users from creating false email addresses and fake personas, providing moderators with a point of contact via email to discuss users’ experiences and complaints.

If you do not have a subscription, you can get one here: https://www.sltrib.com/subscribe/. If you already are a subscriber, use the email associated with your account to log in.

While we’re switching to a new platform, many of the same rules still apply. We do not allow personal attacks, threats, obscenity, spam, commercial promotion, deliberate misinformation and conspiracy theories to be shared at sltrib.com. Posts that are not related to the subject at hand may also be removed.

Comments will be deleted if they are hate speech. This includes racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, religious bigotry or “trolling.” Personal attacks against Tribune staff will be deleted and the user will be banned.

Because all users are subscribers, we hope to have more interaction and transparency between you and the moderators. If a user’s comment is deleted or if they are put in timeout, they will receive an email explaining why. If a user is banned (after three warnings), the user can appeal the ban by emailing comments@sltrib.com.

All commenters will begin with a clean slate on Wednesday. Previous scores and histories will not matter and everyone will start fresh.

If you have any questions about the change, about the Coral platform or anything else, please email comments@sltrib.com, using “Comment question” in the subject line
