Letter: LDS Church loses sight of its main mission

Letter: LDS Church loses sight of its main mission

By David Harris | The Public Forum

I’ve always enjoyed Robert Kirby’s irreverent brand of humor but, more recently, I’ve become more interested in his more serious columns.

For example, I am very happy to see him use his unique platform to express an opinion about the Lavina Fielding Anderson affair, an opinion that I and many others with close ties to the LDS community share.

Presumably, the First Presidency's reasons for refusing to reinstate Anderson's membership are politically based, i.e., they are afraid of how it would make the church look. If so, they've lost sight of the more important issue of the role they could play in the personal welfare of this person and of her family, some of whom are faithful Latter-day Saints.

Aren't they, after all, in the business of saving souls?

They should be ashamed of themselves.
