Lawmaker wants to rename I-35 in Austin after President Trump

If passed, the bill would take effect on Sept. 1, 2025.

A GOP lawmaker is pushing to rename a stretch of a major Texas highway after President Donald Trump. On Friday, Texas Rep. Joanne Shofner (R-Nacogdoches) filed a bill to designate Interstate 35 in Travis County as "President Donald J. Trump Highway." HB 5503 would "design and construct markers" indicating the designation and "erect a marker at each end of the highway and appropriate intermediate sites along the highway."

If passed, the bill would take effect on Sept. 1, 2025. Shofner did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the proposed designation. She was endorsed by Trump in her race for the Texas House District 11 seat. She assumed office on Jan. 14, 2025.

Texas' portion of I-35 also has other designations.

Spanning the U.S. from Laredo, Texas near the Mexican border to Duluth, Minn., I-35 also has other designations in Texas. The north-south highway is the Texas portion of the Purple Heart Trail, "a symbolic and honorary system of roads, highways, bridges, and other monuments that give tribute to the men and women who have been awarded the Purple Heart medal," according to the trail's website. In San Antonio, I-35 is listed as the PanAm Expressway. In Austin, it's listed as the Interregional Highway. In Waco, it's known as the Jack Kultgen Freeway.

It's not the first time a U.S. roadway has been renamed after Trump. Similar proposals—some even put forward before the country's 45th and 47th president began his second term—have recently been made in Arizona, Missouri, Kentucky, and Florida. Currently, there's a Trump Drive in Montana, Trump Avenue in Florida, and a President Donald J. Trump Highway in Oklahoma.
